Stating at the entrance, you need to circumnavigate the temple going counterclockwise, making a short sidestep in the middle corridor, ultimately going up from the rear of the temple to get to the altar.
You can use either the left or right side of the entrance. However, there is no way to pass through the gateway in the top-right corner going clockwise.
Similarly, you cannot pass through the gateway in the middle corridor to get to the altar.
Step 3 of the above solution can also can go over, then up, before heading to the altar.
You cannot go back down to the rear of the temple the way you came.
Once you get to the middle of the temple, the gateways are open, which means you can go out the side corridors. However, trying to get back to the entrance going clockwise doesn't work.
Trying to get back to the entrance going counterclockwise doesn't work, either.
What's left to try? Notice that, in the last attempt going counterclockwise, the gateways alternate being open and closed. The problem is that, right now, they are closed when you get to the gateway on the right side of the temple.
The key to getting back to the entrance is to go out the side corridors, but to go back down to the rear of the temple. You can either go clockwise or counterclockwise to accomplish this (and there are two ways to leave the altar going counterclockwise).
Now, as you move counterclockwise and the gateways alternate between being open and closed, you will find the right gateway to be open. While the gateways closest to the entrance will be closed, a sidestep will open them.
